Pleasant---Mrs. Ethel Van Hon Garretson, 70, died late Friday, Feb. 29 at Burlington Medical Center. She was born in Mt. Pleasant in 1918, the daughter of Fred and Marjory Steadman Van Hon. She was former director of Publicity and Research at Iowa Wesleyan college, former state president of the Iowa Press Women and former director of the Heart Assn. in 14 southeastern Iowa [counties?]. Her varied career included work as a probation and parole officer in California, a newspaper editor, an Iowa school teacher, a Texas rancher, a sorority housemother at the University of California, Berkley, and a senior intern to US Rep. Jim Leach in Washington, D. C. She married Gilbert Garretson in 1933. He was dean of the School of Journalism at the University of Oklahoma City and died in 1941. Surviving: Three sons, Fred, El Cerrito, Calif.; Williams, Des Moines, and Gilbert Jr., San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Helen Van Hon Gabler, Sacramento, Calif.; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and 16 nieces and nephews. Services 10:30 a.m. Monday, St. Michael Episcopal church, Mt. Pleasant. Her remains have been donated to the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, Des Moines. Friends may call as they desire to sign the register at the Weir Cookes funeral home, Mt. Pleasant. Memorials may be made to St. Michale's church or the choice of the donor. Committal services will be held at a later date.
