Admiral Sir William Windham Hornby K. C. B. D. L. J. P.

(23 Jul 1812 - 28 Jun 1899)

One time of Knowsley, Prescot Lancashire, (where he was Comptroller to the Earl of Derby); of 6, Roland Houses, South Kensington, London; and of Southlands, Ryde, Isle of Wight. Educated at R.N. Coll., Portsmouth. Served in H.M.S. Galatea, and was a Midshipman in H.M.S. Rattlesnake, 1828. Then served in H.M.S. Revenge and H.M.S. Gannet. Present at insurrection in Jamaica, 1832. Mate of H.M.S. Ranger, 1832. Kieut., 1833. Served in H.M.S. Satellite in blockade of Dutch Coast. Then served in H.M.Ships Caledonia, Canopus, and Beacon in Mediterranean, and in H.M.S. Benbow, 1838-39. 1st Lieut., H.M.S. Warspite, 1841. In command of H.M.S. Styx on African Coast, 1845. Capt., 1846. Rear-Admiral, 1865. Admiral, 1877. Commissioner of Prisons, 1877-92. J.P. (Lancs). Died without issue.
