"Educated privately. Entered R.N. (Royal Navy), 1850, as cadet in H.M.S. Victory. Then joined H.M.S. Portland, and served in her and H.M. Steam Sloop Virago on Pacific Station. Engaged in surveying expedition from Virago to ascertain possibility of cutting a canal across Isthmus of Darien. Served as midshipman in H.M.S. St. George and in H.M.S. Hastings, forming part of Baltic fleet of 1854/55. Was engaged in bombardment of Sweaborg in attack on Sandham Batteries. Awarded Baltic medal. Was mate of H.M. Brig Elk in China, 1857 (China Medal). Employed in open boat work in Canton River for approx. six months and was mate of Elk's pinnace in boat action of Fatshan Creek. Recd. Clasp. Then promoted Lieut. Served as Lieut. in H.M.S. Hannibal, H.M.S. Terrible and H.M.S. Algiers in Home, Med. and Channel Squadrons. Gunnery Lieut. of H.M.S. Galatea. Present at bombardment of forts at Cap du Haiti, 1865. Served as 1st. and gunnery Lieut. in H.M.S. Challenger; as commander of H.M.S. Prince Consort; and was retired from active list by age and time limit. After retiring the Navy, he settled at The Oaks, Holmwood, Surrey. He was the Chairman of Dorking Rural Council and a Manager of North Holmwood Schools. Died without issue from either marriage."
