John Hornby M. C.
(21 Sep 1880 - 16 Apr 1927)
Educated at Rev Vernon Royle's Preparatory School at Elstree and at Harrow. Left home for Canada, 7 Apr., 1904, and thereafter spent most of his life there, particularly in the Barren Lands of North-West Canada. Member of George M. Douglas's Expdn. to Hearne's Coppermine River, 1911. Served in Gt. War and awarded M.C. Travelled with Capt. J.C. Critchell-Bullock through the Barrens to the Chesterfield Inlet on Hudson Bay, 1924-25. Pioneered the creation of the Thelon Game Sanctuary by the Canadian Govt. Died in the Barren Lands of Canada during a three-man expedition in which his two colleagues, (including his cousin, Edgar Vernon Christian - see Mrs. Margaret Christian, dau. of Charles Herbert Hornby, Esq.) also died. Mr. John Hornby is the subject of "The Legend of John Hornby", by Mr. George Whalley, published by John Murray in 1962.
