Individual Details
Michael (Mike) Joseph MULVIHILL
(22 Apr 1883 - 25 Mar 1975)
I had been told Mike inherited the family farm in Clontubrid, Listowel, Co. Kerry. However, Mike's son Patrick died at the age of 18 in Derry, Listowel, the name of the informant on his death record being his sister Marie of Derry. This indicates the family probably actually lived in Derry, which lies alongside Clontubrid. Furthermore, Mike's headstone in Murhur Cemetery tells us he was from Derry.
However, according to Mulvihill researcher Tom Moloney, "the word 'Derry' on his [Mike's] headstone is problematic. When I look at the Valuation documents for that townland, I see that there have never been any Mulvihills living there - at least not in the twentieth century. After looking at some possibilities, i.e. Michaels with Jeremiah fathers, I've concluded that Michael was born in Dirha East in 1883. His parents were Jeremiah Mulvihill and Johanna Buckley. At the time of the 1901 census they are recorded as being at Dirha: Jeremiah, Johanna, son Michael and a daughter Norah. Then they have vanished by 1911. What seems to have happened is that Jeremiah moved to Cloontubrid South in 1910 where he took on a 100-acre farm... Shortly thereafter he died (6 Aug 1910). The Valuation documents show that Johanna took over in 1912 and then Michael in 1919. Indeed Johanna died on 10 Jan 1919. Johanna and Michael are listed as being resident in Cloontubrid South at the time of the 1911 Census. Now this townland is contiguous with Derry. So I'm suspecting that even though they lived there [Cloontubrid], they may have called the place Derry - following that great Irish tradition of being loose with place names". It therefore appears certain that Mike and his family lived in Clontubrid and not Derry. However, as Mike and his descendants have associated themselves with Derry, and most documentation refers to them as being from Derry, I have linked Mike's descendants to Derry rather than Clontubrid to minimise confusion.
Note: Next to Mike's headstone is another with the name Frances Mulvihill (née Brosnan) of Clountubrid House who died in 2005 (either on 15 Jan. or 15 Jun.). I am told Frances was married to a Patrick (known as Paddy) Mulvihill who was a grandson of Mike's.
It appears Mike's family is closely related to the Mulvihills of Ballygoughlin, Glin, Co. Limerick and the Mulvihill families of Dooncaha and Tarmons, Tarbert, Co. Kerry as the plot in Murhur Cemetery where Mike is buried also contains graves of members of the Ballygoughlin and Tarbert families. However, I have not managed to establish how Mike is connected to these other families.
