Individual Details

Mary LAYDEN

(1 Oct 1885 - 30 Jun 1976)

Mary was a member of the Layden family which owned the Arigna coalmine in Co. Roscommon. According to her marriage record, she was a primary school teacher from Spencer Harbour; her father was a farmer. Witnesses to the marriage were Joseph Doyle and Tessie Layden. It is believed Mary and her huusband, Tom Morahan, were in some way related but I have been unable to establish exactly how.

I am told Mary and Tom lived in the old Morahan family home in Cloonfeacle for a number of years before moving to Summerhill in Carrick-on-Shannon. The farm portion of the 23-acre Morahan property was sold in the 1930s so the move to Summerhill may have been made around then. The family was definitely living in Summerhill by 1942 as the death record of their 17-year-old daughter Bernadette, who died that year, gives her home address as Summerhill. It is though that Mary moved to Dublin after Tom's death in 1949.
