Individual Details
(24 Jan 1891 - 10 Apr 1949)
Thomas was a primary school teacher. In 1912 he was appointed principal of Annaduff National School outside Carrick-on-Shannon. However, the locals objected to the job going to an outsider, so they organised a boycott. A drum would sound in protest every morning at 10 o'clock; parents withdrew their children and sent them to other schools further away; the school was broken into and record books were taken; and Tom had to escorted to and from school by gardaĆ from Dromad and Dromsna stations. Tensions ran high for at least a year, but, thanks to the intervention of another teacher in the school, parents eventually started sending their children back, and Tom continued to teach at Annaduff until shortly before his death in 1949 at the age of 58. He had been suffering from tuberculosis for 16 years and died in Hume St. Hospital in Dublin.
