Thomas FREWEN
(1924 - 10 May 1980)
When Thomas's family emigrated to the United States in the late 1920s he did not accompany them (presumably he was left in the care of relatives in Tipperary). In the early 1930s his family returned to Ireland where they farmed for three or four years in either Aherlow, Co. Tipperary or on the Doody family farm in nearby Ardnamoher, Galbally, Co. Limerick. They eventually returned to the States but, once again, Thomas remained in Ireland. There is speculation he may have been offered the Doody family farm by his uncle Mick who had no children of his own.
A Thomas Frewen, aged 26 and from Aherlow, travelled to New York in April 1950. According to the ship manifest, his destination in New York was 5709 5th Avenue, Brooklyn, which was Thomas and Hannah's address. This was almost certainly Thomas above. It appears he was just visiting his family as we know he returned to Ireland where he lived in the Glen of Aherlow. He never married.
Thomas died at the age of about 56 after being hit by a car while out walking near his home in Aherlow one evening. He died in St. Vincent's Hospital in Tipperary.
A family source once told me the name of Thomas and Hannah's son who remained in Ireland was Richard but this does not seem to be the case. It is possible Thomas junior had a brother named Richard but I have been unable to locate a birth record - or any other record - for a Richard Frewen from this family. In Thomas junior's newspaper death notice from 1980 he was "deeply regretted by his sisters, uncles, aunts...", indicating he was an only son, unless of course he had a brother who had died. It is also possible that Thomas's middle name was Richard. The same source who told me about Richard also said that he and his sister Jane may have been twins. However, it appears it was Thomas and his sister Peggy who were twins as birth records have been located for a Thomas Frewen and a Margaret Frewen who were born in Tipperary in the first quarter of 1924.
