Joe was one of a family of 19 children (five from his father's first marriage and 14 from his second). According to his marriage record, Joe was a farmer and was living at the time in Derrynargon, Carrick-on-Shannon.

Joe and Linda left Derreenargon around 1940 and moved to a farm in Hollymount, Carrick-on-Shannon. Apparently he had considered moving to a farm in Co. Meath at the time but chose Hollymount as the farmhouse there was newly built and it was closer to Dereenargon.
