Individual Details
Matthew HARRINGTON
(21 Aug 1904 - Poss 5 Nov 1973)
From a search of Ellis Island records it appears that Matthew emigrated to the United States in 1923. However, Matthew's father's name on the ship manisfest is given as Thomas Harrington (of Kilbaha) rather than James Harrington. Nevertheless, given the Kilbaha connection and the fact that both our Matthew and the Matthew from the Ellis Island record were 19 years of age and had a brother named Patrick who had already emigrated to the States (the Ellis Island record tells us that Matthew was joining his brother Patrick of 154 East 97th St. in New York), it is possible that it was our Matthew above who emigrated to the United States in 1923.
A Matthew Harrington of Kilbaha, who died in Listowel District Hospital on 5 November 1973 aged 69, is buried in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane. If this is our Matthew above then it appears he returned from the U.S. According to Ahavoher burial records, Matthew was single and died of Parkinsons Disease.
I had been told of a Matthew Harrington of Kilbaha who married a Jane (Janie) Egan, who was born on 6 February 1904 to John Egan and Catherine McMahon from Tarmons, Tarbert, Co. Kerry and who lived in Kilbaha. However, from the Irish Genealogy website it appears that Janie married a James Harrington on 17 March 1943 in Listowel registration district. Unfortunately no image is available for this marriage record so we have no further details as to which Harrington family James belonged. Further information on Janie: she lived in Kilbaha and died on 27 February 1973 aged 69. She is buried in Ahavoher Cemetery.
