Individual Details
Honora (Nora) HAYES
(24 Feb 1883 - 16 Oct 1913)
Sponsors at Nora's baptism were Jeremiah Hudson and Johanna Hudson.
Nora appears to have emigrated to the United States around 1906. She was working as a servant for a William Cohn of Marlborough Ave., Pittsburgh at the time of the 1910 census and it seems she returned to Ireland on a visit in 1911 as Ellis Island records show she sailed from Queenstown on 6 October of that year . She was travelling with a Hannah Cooney whose husband Patrick lived at 855 Kirkpatrick St. in Pittsburg. Hanora also gave Patrick as her American contact on the ship manifest. Both Nora and Hannah stated that they had previously been in the U.S. and had been in Pittsburgh in 1906.
Sadly, Nora died from drowning at the age of 30. Her death certificate states that her death was "probably suicide" and tells us she was found "at a point between the Allegheny and Mononahela rivers" in Pittsburgh. She was unmarried. Her address at the time of her death was 1104 Progress St., Pittsburgh and the informant on the death certificate was a Patrick Cooney of 1604 Progress St., presumably the same Patrick Cooney mentioned above. It was the second death from drowning in Nora's family as her brother John had drowned (accidentally) in Ireland five years earlier.
