Individual Details
Maurice DOWER
(18 Feb 1873 - Aft 2 Apr 1911)
Maurice lived in Derk, Duagh, Co. Kerry.
Listed in Maurice's household in the 1911 census are nieces Kittie and Ellie Cotter, aged 18 and 11 respectively (daughters of Maurice's sister Annie). The census also tells us that the widowered Maurice had been married nine years and had six children born alive, all of whom were living at the time of the census. Because only two children are listed with Maurice in the census (Josephine and Annie Ennetta), it seems possible that his four other children might have been raised by others given that Maurice was a widower with a farm to run. A census return was located for the household of a John Cronin (Maurice's wife's maiden name was Cronin) in Trieneragh, Duagh, Co. Kerry who had two Dower grandchildren listed with him: Margaret aged seven and John aged 12 months, almost certainly Maurice's children. Also listed in John Cronin's household was grandchild Michael McElligott aged 14. Maurice, son of Maurice above, is listed, aged one, in the 1911 census with his aunt Annie (née Dower) and her husband, Nicholas Cotter, in Knockbrack, Brosna, Co. Kerry.
There is a Maurice Dower of Derk buried in Duagh Cemetery who I initially thought was Maurice above. However, the name of his wife, who is buried with him was Mary, not Johanna. As I think it likely that the two Maurices were related, here is the information from the headstone is Duagh Cemetery:
