Individual Details
Mary Ann MCENERY
(28 Feb 1871 - 29 Oct 1961)
Sponsors at Mary's baptism were Patrick O'Connor and Bridget Hudson.
Mary emigrated to Australia and settled in Victoria. We do not know when exactly she left Ireland but, given that she was the informant named on the death certificate of her sister Hanora who died in Tubbertureen in February 1890 and she married in Victoria in 1902, we can say that she emgrated between those dates. Her decision to go to Australia may have been influenced by the fact that she had an aunt, Brigid Collins (née Hudson), who had had been living in Victoria since about 1870. It also appears that Mary's elder brother, Thomas, also emigrated to Australia but we have no information as to when.
Mary met her husband, Richard, in Australia and they had two children - that we know of. Sadly, both children died in infancy, and Richard died just seven years into their marriage, aged only about 28. Mary did not remarry and lived to be about 89 years of age.
Interestingly, a death notice has been located for a Denis McEnery/McInery (the names are synonymous) who died in Melbourne in 1916 and who appears to have been a relative of Mary's. The notice reads:
"McENIRY.—On the 3rd August, at the residence of his niece, Mrs. M. Friend, 5 Miller-street, West Melbourne, Denis McEniry, late of George Robertson's, booksellers, and beloved husband of Catherine McEniry, aged 76 years. No flowers."
He was certainly not an uncle of Mary's but they were surely related. I have been unble to figure out how he and Mary were connected but the Victoria Death Register tells us that Denis's parents were John McEniry and Margaret Culhane.
