Hannah emigrated to the United States in May 1901 and settled in New York where she met her husband, James O'Connor.

Hannah returned to Ireland for a visit in 1911 – she, and her son James, are recorded as visitors at her mother’s home on the 1911 Irish census which was taken on 2 April. They left Ireland later that month, arriving in New York in early May.

By 1920 James and Johanna had moved to New Jersey, settling in the town of New Milford where James worked as a carpenter.
