William (Bill) SHINE

(22 Jun 1873 - 17 Jul 1954)

Bill lived in Kilbaha.

We have information on Bill's family from Dan Keane's account of tradespeople in Moyvane in the book The Boro' and the Cross (2000). Dan tells us that Bill was a descendant of a Mr. Shine who came to Kilbaha, Newtownsandes from Co. Cork (perhaps Cobh) with his brother and sister. The siblings lived for a time on a farm in Kilbaha, which eventually passed down to Bill [this would be Bill above]. Bill's son, Connie Bill, inherited the farm and after his death it became the property of Patrick Kearney of Kilbaha (a relative of Bill's wife, Mary Kearney, perhaps?).

It appears Bill's ancestor's brother eventually returned to Cork while Bill's ancestor met a local woman, whose surname was Mulvihill. As Dan Keane tells us "I don’t know anything of his romances or if the girl had any influence on him, but he was in a coach with his brother on their way to Cobh, he leaped from the coach and came back to work as a cooper". Dan does not mention of what became of Bill's ancestor's sister but her brother who stayed in Kilbaha married Miss Mulvihill and he moved to her farm.

I was presuming that it was Bill's grandfather Daniel Shine who came from Cork as he married a Mary Mulvihill, but Dan Keane tells the name of the Shine sibling from Cork who stayed on in Kilbaha was Con (Cornelius): "...it was from this farm [i.e. the siblings' Kilbaha farm] that Con Shine (grandfather to the present Connie and Jack on the Glin Road) came and married into the farm where Connie now resides, marrying a girl by the name of Mulvihill who owned the farm". Perhaps it was Bill's great-grandfather, whose first name was probably Cornelius, who came from Cork. Any help in clarifying which of Bill's ancestors was from Cork would be much appreciated. According to Dan Keane, the Kilbaha branch of the Shine family is the only one to be known as the Coopers, even though the Dirreen and Athea (both Co. Limerick) Shines also share the same Cork ancestor. We are also told that a "Dan Shine (brother to Molly Shine, the teacher) was also a cooper. His residence and workshop was where Bobby Stack and family now live." However, we do not know if Dan was a Kilbaha or Dirreen/Athea Shine.

The Shines were also involved in the making of traps (for use with ponies) and trap wheels. "Con Shine, grandfather of Bridie Shine (née Shine), Glin Road, worked at the trade for years. His sons Con and Dan carried on the trade."

However, neither Bill above nor his father, Con, was a cooper or trap maker (they were farmers), although there were Shine families in Newtownsandes village and the townland of Gortdromasillihy who were coopers. These were, no doubt, connected to Bill's family.
