Individual Details

Daniel MULVIHILL

( - )

It appears that Daniel had three farms, one in Clounbrane, one in Gortdromasillihy and the third in Kilbaha, all in the parish of Newtownsandes (now named Moyvane), Co. Kerry. Apparently three of his sons each inherited a farm. According to Mulvihill researcher Tom Moloney, "the [farm] in Clounbrane (58 acres) was under Daniel's name in Griffiths. It went to Cornelius in 1859-60 [presumably Daniel's son Con]. Another 30 acres were added to it in 1903 (formerly McElligotts). Then in 1910 it passed to Michael [presumably Con's son Michael]. The one in Gortdromasillahy (87 acres) was also under Daniel's name in Griffiths and went to Michael in 1859-60 [presumably Daniel's son Mick]. Then another Daniel in 1901 [presumably Mick's son Daniel] and another Michael in 1943 {presumably the son of Daniel just mentioned]... There was no Mulvihill farm in Kilbaha at the time of Griffiths apart from three small holdings: Myles (one acre and a half), Timothy (4 acres) and William (1 acre) - the first two in Kilbaha South, the other in Kilbaha West. If we go back to the time of the Tithes (1820s), there are two farms in Kilbaha featuring the Mulvihill name. Unfortunately it doesn't give the forename of the occupiers. The two are:
Lawlor & Mulvihill: 128 acres
Shehan, Mulvihill, Sullivan & Hanrahan: 125 acres".

Daniel's family is related by marriage to the Mulvihills of Shronowen, Listowel, Co. Kerry. The connection is through Daniel's granddaughter Nora Mulvihill, daughter of Mick Mulvihill and Norrie Cunningham, who married Michael Mulvihill, son of Patrick Mulvihill of Shronowen. It is possible Daniel's family and the Shronowen Mulvihills are also blood-related but this would need to be researched. There are other Mulvihill families that feature in my family tree, such as the Mulvihills of Faha and Leansahane in Ballybunion, and of Tarbert, who may also be related to the other Mulvihill families mentioned above.

Mulvihill researchers may be interested in the family of a Denis Mulvihill (c.1832-1887) from Newtownsandes, possibly from Clounbrane, who married a Mary Mulvihill who was probably from Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. Denis and Mary emigrated to the United States, most likely in 1863 with their first two children, Daniel and Johanna, and settled in Sidney, Ohio where they had four more children: Michael, Catherne, Mary and Denis. It is believed that Denis Senior had a brother named Daniel who lived in Pittsburg and had a family with his wife, Ellen.

Note from Helen: Although neither my husband nor I am descended from Daniel above, I came across the information below in the course of my research into the family of my great-great-grandaunt Biddy Cunningham of Kilbaha, Moyvane who married John Mulvihill (from Aughrim, Moyvane). Although John does not appear to be related to Daniel, the information below on Daniel and his descendants may be of some use to those researching the Mulvihill families of Clounbrane, Gortdromasillihy, Kilbaha and Shronowen.
