Individual Details

John was a member of the Fianna movement during the War of Independence. Following the subsequent Civil War he joined the Capuchin order and was ordained in Cork in June 1931, becoming Fr. Ephrem. He was sent to minister in the United States where he lived for five or six years. I have been told he served in Hermiston and Bend, both in Oregon, during this time. However, the Our Lady of Angels (Capuchin order) website tells us "he was first stationed at Wilmington, Delaware (Holyoke). In 1934 he was appointed assistant pastor of Sacred Heart parish in Lincoln, Nebraska. During the summer of 1935 he substituted at Aurora and Heartwell and during the winter he substituted at Superior and Nelson. Suring the summer of 1937 he was appointed pastor at Sacred Heart. He held this position for only one year (1937) since financial difficulties and other considerations forced the Capuchins to withdraw from the Lincoln diocese on December 9 1937. After leaving Nebraska he helped out in parish missions and novenas. In February 1938, Ephrem returned to Ireland".

In Ireland he ministered in Kilkenny for a number years prior to moving to Dublin where he lived in Raheny. At some point he also served at the Capuchin friary in Ards, Co. Donegal.

Owing to cardiac problems Fr. Ephrem's health was not good during the last year of his life. He died at the Capuchin Friary, Church St., Dublin aged 54.
