Michael Francis KENNELLY
(22 May 1914 - 3 Jan 2011)
Michael served as a priest in the United States. He went to the U.S. in 1929 at the age of 14 and lived with his uncle Jim Kennelly and his family for three or four years while he attended Regis High School in Manhattan in preparation for joining the Jesuit order. He finished his high school education at the Jesuit-run Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, graduating in 1933, after which he joined the Jesuit order at their novitiate in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. He became a U.S. citizen in 1936.
After three years of teaching at Jesuit High School in Tampa, Florida, Michael began theology studies for the priesthood and was ordained on 16 June 1946 in St. Mary's College in Kansas. Michael served as principal at St. John's High School in Shreveport, Louisiana from 1948 until 1953 when he was appointed president of Jesuit High School in Tampa, serving there until 1959. He was then sent to Texas to set up Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School in Houston, where he served as president until 1970 when he was appointed president of Loyola University in New Orleans, a position he held for four years. Michael subsequently returned to Florida where he served at Gesu Church in Miami and Sacred Heart Church in Tampa, returning to Jesuit High School in Tampa in 1990 as rector and vice-president. 1997 saw Michael back at Sacred Heart Church as pastor emeritus and parochial vicar. He spent four years at Sacred Heart before moving to Ignatius Residence, a community of retired Jesuit priests and brothers in New Orleans.
