Dan, also known as Dan Myles, started working in the family pub at the age of 15. According to a 1993 article on the pub in The Kerryman newspaper (written around the time Dan celebrated his 90th birthday), "at that time, Kearneys was the focal point in Moyvane. Like many pubs at the time in Ireland, it was also a grocery, hardware, drapery, newsagents and supplier of animal feed, milking machines and bicycle repair shop". Dan also worked as an auctioneer.
