Bertie qualified as a doctor in Dublin. He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and it is known that he worked as a doctor in the London area for a time before moving to Australia. He lived in Leonora, Western Australia for several years, working at the Leonora District Hospital. Electoral Rolls tells us he was resident in Leonora in 1937 but had moved to Bankstown (400 Chapel Road), New South Wales by 1943.
