Mary GAVIN

(Abt 1791 - 3 Mar 1863)

Unfortunately we do not know anything about the Gavin family. There is a John Gavin listed in Griffith's Valuation (July 1851) for Soloheadbeg so perhaps Mary was a member of this family.

It appears Mary emigrated to Newfoundland with one or more of her children. I am presuming she moved after the death of her husband, Edmond (although we do not have a date of death for Edmond). Several of her children had left Ireland for Newfoundland so it is perhaps not surprising she settled there.

Note: The Gavin surname is quite numerous in south Leinster, north Munster, and Co. Mayo. It is derived from the Irish names Ó Gábháin and Ó Gáibhín. Originally there were septs in west Cork and in Mayo, but the name is now common to all provinces.
