Richard emigrated to the United States in 1849. He was a Civil War veteran, having served with the 3rd Regiment of the Wisconsin Cavalry between December 1861 and June 1862. He returned to civilian life before the end of the war as a result of an accident (details unknown) and worked as a stonemason. He lived for many years in Oshkosh and had been unwell for a number of years before he died at his home in 1902 aged 75.
