James (Jim) THORNTON

(Poss Jun 1818 - Poss 9 Apr 1884)

I think it possible that Jim was the James Thornton baptised in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry on 30 June 1818 is our Jim above, The parents of this James Thornton were John Thornton and Elizabeth McElligott.

There is a James Thornton listed in Griffith's Valuation (1848-1864) who occupied land in Kilbaha Middle in the parish of Murher (Moyvane). This James is the only Thornton listed for the entire barony of Iraghticonnor, of which Murher is a part, which suggests that this James is our Jim above.

A James Thornton in Church Street, Listowel on 9 April 1884. His death record describes him as a farmer and his age is given as 65, which ties in with the June 1818 birthdate mentioned above . I therefore think it likely that this James Thornton is our Jim above, despite the fact that he was living in Listowel rather than Kilbaha.

Valuation documents show that the occupier of Jim's farm changed from James to his wife, Hanora, in 1888. This fits with Jim having died in 1884 (changes in the valuation books often lagged behind actual changes). James, a son of Jim and Hanora's, became the occupier in 1902.
