John's gravestone gives his year of birth as 15 November 1809.

John emigrated to the United States in 1847 with his wife and eldest child, James, along with a cousin, Maurice Woulfe (James had a number of cousins named Maurice Woulfe but we do not know which Maurice travelled with him). The family lived initially in Chicago before moving to Ottawa, Illinois; and in 1855 they settled in Clinton County, Iowa.
