Individual Details

John FITZGERALD

(Abt 12 Nov 1880 - 22 Feb 1976)

John studied at St. Michael's College, Co. Kerry; St. Munchin's Catholic College, Limerick; and St. John's Seminary, Waterford before being ordained a priest on 19 June 1904. His first mass was in the Pro-Cathedral, St. John's Church in Waterford.

According to family sources, John was a cousin of Bishop John Francis Cunningham of Concordia, Kansas. While no proof of this has been found, it seems likely they were related as Bishop Cunningham's mother's maiden name was Fitzgerald and John was sent to Concordia in September 1904 from where Bishop Cunningham appointed him assistant pastor (i.e. assistant parish priest) of the Sacred Heart Church at Salina, Kansas.

After 10 weeks in Salina Bishop Cunningham appointed John pastor of Ss. Peter and Paul's Church at Cawker City, Kansas, where he remained until February 1906 when he became pastor of the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help at Goodland, Kansas while also serving at the Sacred Heart Church in Colby, about 40 miles distant. In 1911 he was sent to Lincoln, Kansas as pastor of St. Patrick's. I have no further information on John's postings but he may have spent his entire career in Kansas as he died there aged 95.
