Sometime in the early 1850s, probably upon his marriage, John took over the land of a David Roche in Knocknasna. It is highly likely that David was John’s father-in-law.
It appears John's family was related to the family of Kate Fitzgerald (born c.1810) who married John Cunningham around 1827 and lived in Irremore or Mouncoal, near Listowel, Co. Kerry. However I have not managed to determine how exactly they were connected. Kate and John were the parents of Bishop John Francis Cunningham (1842-1919) of Concordia, Kansas.
