John TIDMARSH

(Abt 1749 - Prob Jan 1840)

John is recorded in 1807 as an "inn holder". A John Tidmarsh was buried on 13 January 1840 in Kilcolman parish, Milltown, Co. Kerry. He was aged 90. I think it likely this was John above. The birth year given above has been calculated from his age at death.

In the Kerry Evening Post of 1 August 1835 we are told that a John Tidmarsh was found guilty of "malicious assault" and was sentenced to three months imprisonment and to give security to keep the peace towards prosecutor, himself in £40 and two sureties of £20 each" (no further details were provided). Could this John have been a son or nephew of John above?

And could John above have been related to the Kerry Tidmarsh of Ardfert, Co. Kerry who was the subject of a piece in the Kerry Evening Post of 6 April 1836? "On Friday last, as Mr. Kerry Tidmarsh, the respectable individual who has acted as interpreter in our courts for some time past, was riding home to his cottage at Ardfert Commons, he received a violent fall from his horse, in consequence of a pig having crossed him on the road, and was so severely injured that he languished in great pain until Monday morning, when he expired. Mr. Tidmarsh was a gentleman of very unexceptionable character, and has left a very large family to lament his melancholy end". Some online research it appears Kerry was married to Anne Moriarty from Co. Kerry. Among their children were Catherine who married Robert Molyneux of Kilkenny in 1838, and James Moriarty Tidmarsh who married Jane Molyneux of Hubbertstown, Co. Kildare in 1837. James would be appointed High Sherriff of Kilkenny in 1861. James and Jane's son Robert died of typhus at his home in Grange, Kilkenny in 1867.
