Michael MOLLOY
(Abt 1781 - 22 Feb 1866)
Michael farmed in Ballyfermoyle. Research carried out in the late 1970s and early 1980s by Col. Cyril Mattimoe, a descendant of Michael above, tells us it certain the Molloys were NOT natives of Co. Roscommon. Cyril recalled his mother telling him the Molloy family was from Meath and initially assumed she meant Co. Meath. However, years later he discovered that the Meath his mother mentioned "was the old name of a territory in Co. Offaly which included Ferceall, the ancient territory of the Molloys". Another relative told Cyril the family came from Tullamore, Co. Offaly and another said that the Molloy farm in Ballyfermoyle had been in the family for 300 years, so it appears the Molloys left Offaly around the middle of the 17th century. Cyril thought it likely they were transported to Roscommon in the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland.
Cyril also tells us there was another Molloy family in the Cootehall area of Co. Roscommon. These were the Oakport Molloys and apparently they settled in the area in the late 16th century. Cyril found no evidence of a blood connection between the Oakport and Ballyfermoyle Molloys but it seems the two families were close.
On 19 July 1847, a Michael Molloy of Ballyfermoyle was fined sixpence plus sixpence in costs for "furiously driving his horse and cart through the street of Leitrim" on 13 July. Was this Michael above or his son Michael?
Note from Helen: neither my husband nor I am directly related to the Molloy family but Michael's grandson Joe Molloy of Hollymount, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim married my husband's grandaunt Linda Morahan in 1918. Another relative of my husband's, Laurence O'Hara, married a Catherine Mulloy or Molloy from Cootehall, daughter of Charles Mulloy/Molloy, in 1846. Could Catherine have been member of the Ballyfermoyle or Oakport Molloy families?
