Individual Details

Thomas GORDON

(Abt 17 Apr 1859 - Apr 1918)

Thomas emigrated to England and settled in Ladybarn, Withington, Lancashire. He lived all his married life at 6 Edward St. (since renamed Beverly Road) in Ladybarn. The 1901 census tells us that was a "Farm Labourer (yard)" but this was crossed out and replaced with what looks like "Ag Horse". By the time of the 1911 census he was a carter for Manchester Corporation. From time to time, Thomas, who grew up on a farm, kept goats, turkeys and other poultry in the small back yard of 6 Edward St.

Thomas died in the influenza epidemic of 1918. He left an estate worth £241 1s to his wife, Mary. Thomas's grandson Frederick Beesley, who never knew Thomas as he had died when Frederick was only about a year old, wrote of him many years later "The impression I have of him from other relatives is that he was a quiet, hard-working man with an equable temperament".
