Individual Details
Patrick Thomas HORKAN
(POSSIBLY ABOUT 1852 - 5 Jul 1885)
Patrick owned a large drapery business in Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo. At some point he ran into financial difficulties and lost the business. He subsequently took a job as manager of the Todd, Burns & Co. drapery company which seems to have had shops in Dublin, Cork and Limerick, although we do not know which branch Patrick worked in. He was later employed as manager of the Commercial Drapery Establishment in Cappoquin, Co. Waterford.
Patrick was widowered young and about four years later, on 5 July 1885, he himself died in a drowning accident in the Blackwater river at Salterbridge near Cappoquin. He and his nine-year-old son, George, had been fishing that afternoon, and George was apparently sent home at about 6pm while Patrick remained at the river. When Patrick failed to return home a search was begun and his body was located early the following morning. He was only in his early thirties.
Apparently Patrick had a problem with his drapery business in 1877 and there were court cases for a couple of years in Dublin. Pat was committed to Kilmainham Jail in 1877 (he is on their register; how long he stayed there we don't know). There were bankruptcy proceedings which were apparently still ongoing in 1885. Whether Patrick found it all too much is not known.
