Individual Details

George J. HORKAN

(8 Sep 1851 - 15 Feb 1928)

The Miles City website (www.milescity.com) tells us that George emigrated to the United States in 1880. First he went to Wisconsin, then on to Montana Territory in 1882, spending his first year there in the Pine Hills near Miles City. He subsequently squatted on unsurveyed lands on Little Pumpkin Creek, about 60 miles from Miles City, and homesteaded the ranch when government surveys were made. He later purchased other property and at one point his holdings totalled about 18,000 acres. George was one of the first sheep ranchers in the state and one of the few to stay in the sheep business throughout his life.

George was active in organising the Wool Growers Association of Custer County (in which Miles City is located). He was also a stockholder of the Billings Packing House, director and president of Lakin Brothers Mercantile establishment and was a director of the Commercial State Bank of Miles City.
