Individual Details

John (Jack) Patrick GORDON

(Abt 3 Jun 1883 - 24 Aug 1934)

The only sponsor listed at Jack's baptism was Thomas Gordon. Jack took over the running of the family's shop in Ballaghaderreen, James Gordon & Son, from his father. The business prospered and Jack left an estate worth £31,578 (according to the The Connaught Tribune edition of 15 August 1936).

Jack died, aged 51, at Ross's Hotel in Dun Laoghaire where he and his wife, Annie, and their daughter Denise had been staying for a number of weeks. Denise would have been about 10 years of age. Jack had had a stroke about a year beforehand and had been in poor health since then. His condition had seriously deteriorated about a week before his death.

The Ballaghaderreen shop continued in business for another 20 years and was sold in 1955, along with farmland outside Ballaghaderreen.

Note: It is thought that Jack's Gordon ancestors may have moved to Ballaghaderreen from Strokestown, also in Co. Roscommon.
