Denis MCENERY

(Abt 5 Jan 1840 - 10 Jun 1891)

Denis died of spinal sclerosis aged 51. After his death the occupier of his land as listed in Griffiths Valuation was changed to "reps. of Denis McEnery" in the revision book of 1893, and in 1900 the farm was formally divided into three parts. Mary Hudson, the widow of Denis's brother Michael, occupied 140 acres, with the represenatatives of Denis holding 173 acres, along with the remaining 372 acres of bog. Then, in 1901, Mary Moran, Denis's widow, became the occupier of all three parcels of land. However, it appears that Michael's widow and her family continued to live on their own farm.

Land Acts around this time allowed tenants to puchase the farms they leased, and by 1909 the McEnerys had purchased their farms. There were now four parcels of McEnery land in Tubbertureen: Mary Hudson's 140 acres went to her sons Edmund (76 acres) and Jeremiah (64 acres); Mary Moran retained 87 acres of her farm, with the remaining 86 acres going to her son John. The 372 acres of bog was now owned jointly by Edmond, Jeremiah, Mary and John.
