James GORDON

(Abt 11 Apr 1862 - 25 Sep 1935)

James inherited the family farm in Kilgarriff. It appears he was the only one of his siblings to remain in Ireland; everyone else who survived to adulthood emigrated to the United States or New Zealand.

According to family sources James left Kilgarriff in 1927 or 1928 having negotiated a land exchange with the Land Commission. He had wanted better land in order to move from pig- to sheep-farming and was given good land (although at a higher rent than before) in Knockalachta, Ballintubber, Co. Roscommon in return for the transfer of his Kilgarriff farm to Tom Donnellan, the husband of James's first cousin Winifred Gordon. Tom, who already had a holding of land adjoining James's land in Kilgarriff, ended up with an 80-acre property, including two bogs, following the transfer. Winifred's nephew Thomas, son of her brother Pat, rented both farms for many years before purchasing the property in 1949.
