Ellen Teresa GORDON

Ellen emigrated to the United States at the age of 18. According to the family she was very free-spirited and the story goes that she stole the ticket for the voyage from her elder sister Anne who was home from the States to visit her parents. This is likely the reason that Anne's name appears on the ship manifest when it was actually Ellen who made the journey. Ellen arrived in Newport, Rhode Island in June 1894 and was met by her brother Mike who lived there.
It is thought that Ellen found work for the summer of 1894 with the family of Ogden and Mary Goelet, possibly caring for their children, until they returned to their New York City home. We do not know how long Ellen worked in Newport but by 1898 it appears she had moved to New York as her younger sister Lizzie arrived from Ireland in that year and was joining Ellen whose address on the ship manifest is given as 17 West 55th Street.
Owing to ill health Ellen returned to Ireland for a visit in March 1902. The following month she married Michael Garvey whom she had known from her schooldays. It appears Ellen, Michael and their young family lived in poverty in Kilkeevin until Ellen's brother John, who was home on holiday with his family in June 1907, lent them the money for a move to the U.S. The family arrived in New York in October l907, accompanied by Michael's sister Bridget.
The family lived for a time in Manhattan and in 1922 moved to Brooklyn where Ellen's brothers Mike and John were living. Ellen and Michael initially lived at 341 East 35th St. in Flatbush and five years later moved to 272 East 34th St., to a house they bought from John and where they lived for the rest of their lives.
