Individual Details
Johanna Mary (Violet, Vi) RYAN
(16 Apr 1902 - 29 Aug 1963)
Johanna was called Violet or Vi by some family members. According to family sources Johanna was born in 1904. However, the 1939 Register, available on the Findmypast website, gives her date of birth as 16 April 1902 which, interestingly, is the same date of birth as a Matthew Ryan, located on the Irish Genealogy website, who was born in Cork to a mother whose maiden name was Doody. As we know that Johanna's brother Matthew Joseph listed here who was born on 23 Feb 1895 survived to adulthood it looks like a transcription error occurred (giving Johanna's father's name rather than Johanna). I am therefore assuming that Johanna was actually born on 16 April 1902.
In the 1939 Register Johanna is listed with her parents at 71 Burnham Road, St. Albans, Hertfordshire. Her husband, Harry, who was a member of the Royal Air Force (RAF) is not listed, presumably owing to war duties. There are two lines in the Register after Johanna's entry which are blacked out and I am assuming these lines relate to two of Johanna's children. The reason for blacking out names on Findmypast is to protect the privacy of people who may still be living.
By 1953 Johanna, Harry and their family were living at No. 20 P.T.C., RAF Cranage, Middlewich, Cheshire. Johanna and Harry later moved to Newmarket, Suffolk. At the time of her death Johanna, by then widowed, was living at 96 All Saints Road in Newmarket.
Note: The Birth Register mistakenly shows the name Matthew instead of Johanna but there is a note written alongside the entry explaining that there is an error.
