Individual Details

Matthew Joseph RYAN

(23 Feb 1895 - 1969)

The 1911 census tells us that 16-year-old Matthew was living with his family in Balfast and working as a paper machinist. He emigrated to the United States in August 1918 and we know from his World War I Draft Registration Card that he was living and working in Naugatuck, Connecticut in September 1918 (his address at 57 Oak St. being that of his aunt Catherine Kiely). The Registration Card also tells us that he had had the tops of four fingers amputated on his left hand. Matthew appears to have moved back to Ireland shortly afterwards as he was married in Belfast in 1919 giving his address as 10 Gamble St., Belfast (his family lived at 14 Gamble St.).

Matthew later settled in England and we know from the 1939 Register that he and his wife and family were living at the time at 48 Ferdinand Street, St. Pancras, London.
