Florence was born in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa in 1895, 4 yearsbefore the Boer War. Both her parents were killed in that war andFlorence was returned to England to live with her aunt, Alice Renshaw(Eccles) in Yorkshire. Aunt Alice was a widow at that time but laterremarried. They moved to Canada. Florence had a brother, William who wasstillborn. Another account states that William died on the return trip toEngland and was buried at sea.
Her mother, Mary Clark(McAloon) was also a widow when she married Harry.
