Individual Details

Joseph Hart

(Bet Abt 1695 and 1700 - March 1777)

Yeoman

Joseph was born about 1695-1700, the son of John Hart and Mary Hunt. As a child, he relocated with his father and brothers from Newtown, Queens Co., Long Island, NY, to Maidenhead, old Burlington (later Hunterdon, now Mercer) Co., NJ, in or about 1703. He referred to himself as a yeoman.

He made his will 20 Apr. 1776, and his estate was inventoried on 2 Apr. 1777. Presumably, his death occurred shortly before the latter date in Hopewell Twp., old Hunterdon (now Mercer) Co., where he resided.

From his will, he is known to be the father of 6 children. He bequeathed £20 to each of his 4 daughters. Their brother Amos, who was given the plantation on which he lived, was to pay £15 to each sister. Their brother Joseph, who was given the home plantation, was to pay £5 to each. The children were as follows:

* 1. Mary, b. abt 1727, m. Jeremiah Woolsey (named a co-executor by her father)
* 2. Amos Hart, "eldest son" and co-executor--linked below
* 3. Abigail, m. Joshua Reed
* 4. Naomi, m. John Howell
* 5. Lois, m. James Stout Jr.
* 6. Joseph Hart, "youngest son" and co-executor, m. Frances Phillips
