Thomas Avery

(18 Oct 1835 - 23 May 1890)

Hi, Judy......I came across your message on the Avery surname message board and would be very grateful for any of the info you have gleaned about the Averys of 16th century England. I live in the city of Bristol, South Gloucestershire, England and there are quite a few of the Avery 'tribe' hereabouts! From what I have learnt, the Averys are of French Norman extraction (Avurie) and came to England as part of Duke William's army in 1066 and was granted lands by a grateful future William the First. Apparantly we are also related to the MacAvoys of Ireland and also another branch of the family called Averill. One of our famous ancestors was the pirate Thomas Avery who originally came from my home town and retired to Plymouth and opened up a tavern in about 1720(?) I hope this is of some interest to you and I would be very pleased to hear from you if you ever come across any other info. Sincerely, William Avery
