Roger Ferris "of Corsham" (b. c.1551)

From "The Visitation of the County of Gloucester in the Year 1623," Chitty and Phillpot (1885), p. 59:
"The pedigree commences with Roger Ferrers of Hidington, co. Glouc. (doubtless Fiddington, the error arising from a mis-reading of the double “f”). This Roger was probably the same as Roger described as third son of Roger said in this pedigree to be of Corsham, and brother of William."

Corsham House, Wikipedia [Margaret Hungerford; mid-17th century??]

Early history
Corsham was a royal manor in the days of the Saxon kings, reputed to have been a seat of Ethelred the Unready. After William the Conqueror, the manor continued to be passed down through the generations in the royal family. It often formed part of the dower of the Queens of England during the late 14th and early 15th centuries, becoming known as Corsham Reginae. During the 16th century, the manor went to two of Henry VIII's wives, namely Catherine of Aragon until 1536, and Katherine Parr until 1548.

During the reign of Elizabeth I the estate passed out of the royal family; the present house was built in 1582 by Thomas Smythe. The owner of Corsham Court in the mid-seventeenth century was the commander of the Parliamentarian New Model Army in Wiltshire; his wife, Lady Margaret Hungerford, built what came to be known as the Hungerford Almshouses in the centre of town.

CORSHAM COURT
HISTORIC DEVELOPMENT

Corsham was owned by the Crown during the medieval period and there was a park at that time, the earliest reference to which is in the Calender of Close Rolls of 1246 (Pearson Assocs 1997). Corsham is also briefly described in Leland's Itinerary for England and Wales 1535-1543 (ibid). In 1575 the Corsham estate was leased to Thomas Smythe (1522-91), Collector of the Customs of London; work on the present house began in 1582. In 1602 Corsham was sold to Sir Edward Hungerford, and the estate remained in his family until 1684. From that date the estate passed through several ownerships until it was bought by Robert Neal of Corsham c 1746, on behalf of Paul Methuen (1723-95). A plan of 1745, probably made in connection with the sale, shows the house with a forecourt to its south and an enclosed garden to its north, surrounded by a park with three radiating avenues and two ponds in its eastern part.

The Fiddington estate formerly of the Countess of Warwick was called FIDDINGTON manor when the Crown leased it, in each instance to one of the king's musicians, in 1530 and 1542, (fn. 227) and as FIDDINGTON AND NATTON manor was granted in fee to Thomas Seymour, Lord Seymour, in 1547. (fn. 228)... In 1707 the beneficiary of the mortgage was Anne Kemble, widow, (fn. 235) who already held, as had her husband Thomas before her, a lease of the small estate in Fiddington belonging to Brasenose College, Oxford, and leased by the college to successive members of the Kemble family. Richard Kemble, who preceded Thomas as the college's lessee, (fn. 236) had in 1651 acquired lands in Fiddington from Sir Henry Ferrers, Bt., son of John Ferrers of Fiddington. John Ferrers's father, Roger, who came from Corsham (Wilts.), had married Margaret, daughter of Giles Badger (fn. 237) of Fiddington (fl. 1536), (fn. 238) and was recorded in 1547 as a copyholder of the Warwick manor of Fiddington and Natton, along with Christopher Kemble who had succeeded to the holding of his father, Richard. (fn. 239) John Ferrers's younger brother, William (d. 1625), a citizen of London, whose monument is in Ashchurch church, endowed charities in Ashchurch and Tewkesbury. (fn. 240)

Ferrers of Fiddington, Ashchurch, Gloucestershire

Roger Ferrers (1516-1579) was "of" Corsham, Wiltshire, about 20 miles south of Tewkesbury. He married in 1546 Margaret Badger, whose father, Giles Badger, was from Fiddington, Ashcurch.

Ashchurch lies immediately east of Tewkesbury and had only about 260 communicants in 1551. Therefore, it is unlikely there was more than one Roger Ferrers in the village. BHO, Parishes: Aschurch (fn. 80) http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/glos/vol8/pp172-188

John Ferrers as eldest son
"The Visitation of the County of Gloucester in the Year 1623," Chitty and Phillpot (1885), p. 59-60, shows Roger Ferrers and Margerett Badger having 4 sons. The first was John who married Ellenor (daughter of Edward Ferrers of Badesley Clinton) and who was 76 in 1623 and therefore born in 1547. The second son was William, the third Roger and the fourth John of London. No explanation is given the Visitation for the naming of the fourth son as John, if the first son John was still living.

The History of Parliament identifies MP Edward Ferrers (1573-1639) as the son of Roger Ferrers (1516-1579) and Margaret Badger of Fiddington, Ashchurch, Gloucestershire. Further, it states that "[a]lthough Ferrers’ eldest brother married into the ancient family of the same name, seated for centuries at Baddesley Clinton, consanguinity cannot be proved." The History of Parliament Online
http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1604-1629/member/ferrers-edward-1573-1639

There is a record on FindMyPast for the marriage at Baddesley Clinton, Warwickshire of John Ferrers of Fiddington, Glocester and Elenor of Warwickshire. She was the daughter of Edward Ferrers (b.betw. 1524 & 1527-d.1564) and Bridget Windsor. This Edward was an MP in 1553-54 and had been a ward of the King when his father died young. His wardship was acquired by Elizabeth, the daughter of Sir Robert Throckmorton. THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES PROB 11/52/36
http://www.oxford-shakespeare.com/Probate/PROB_11-52_f_10.pdf

In "Baddesley Clinton, its Manor, Church, and Hall" (1887) at p. 119, Rev. Henry Norris lists Edward's issue including Eleanor and states that "She became the wife of John Ferrers of Fiddington, co. Gloucester." This Edward was the only son of Henry Ferrers (d.1526) and Katherine Hampden. His grandfather, Edward (d.1535) had acquired Baddesley-Clinton when he married Constance Brome (d.1551). The marriage record appears below.

William Ferrers as second son
A monument built in honor of William Ferrers in Ashchurch by his brother Thomas Ferrers says "William Ferrers, Citisen of London, second sonn of Roger Ferrers of Fiddington..." This is clear evidence that William was the second son.
"The Visitation of the County of Gloucester in the Year 1623," Chitty and Phillpot (1885), p. 59.

The parish records for Ashchurch include 10 children born to a Roger Ferries between 1555/6 and 1579 when Roger died. Three of those children were named Thomas, but no corresponding burial records were found for the possible early deaths of any of those children named Thomas.

Roger Ferries' (1516-1579) surname is spelled as Ferries, Feries, Ferres, Ferryes and Farris with Ferries being the most common.

The following are the children of Roger Ferrers (1516-1579) and Margaret Badger. No baptism records were found for the first four children but they do appear in the 1623 Visitation records (see above).

1547 John Ferrers
c.1549 William
c.1551 Roger
c.1554 John
