Individual Details
Thomas Mims
(22 Apr 1681 - 26 Apr 1719)
The Thomas Mims of Middlesex Co is a different man from the Thomas Mims of St. Peter's Parish. I don't believe you can make the years of births and marriages work. The Thomas Mims born in 1681 was too young to be marrying (in those times) by Feb 1699. Also, Middlesex County is too far from New Kent County. If you look on a map, Middlesex is one peninsula (neck) away from New Kent. It is not likely that the family would have migrated in that direction.
I wouldn't put too much store in the name Drury as a compelling reason for a connection. There were lots of Drurys around in VA from early on.
Descendants of Thomas Mims (Middlesex Co VA)
1. THOMAS MIMS was born c 1637 in prob England, and died Feb 1693/94 in Middlesex Co VA. He married ANNE c 1676 in Middlesex Co VA. She was born c 1656, and died Aft. Nov 1694.
Notes for THOMAS MIMS:
It is not known where Thomas Mims was born or when. By Jun 1657, he had arrived in the colony of VA because Vincent Stanford of Lancaster Co VA received credit for transporting Thomas. Mims may have been an indentured servant. Some of the records of this family show the name as Mimms, Mimbs, Mins, Minns, etc. Since spelling was haphazard and not standardized, this is not unusual.
If this Thomas arrived in Lancaster County VA by 1657, it would be reasonable for him to appear in Middlesex County which was formed from Lancaster Co in 1669. Thomas married Anne (maybe Stanford or Stafford) about 1676. Her name is known because of the christening records of 2 of their children at Christ Church in Middlesex Co VA. The birth of their daughter Elizabeth in 1677 and her death 18 months later were recorded in the church record. Their son Thomas was baptized in the "Great Church" in 1681. They had at least 2 other children but their births were not listed.
[need deed and court records 1677-1694]
Thomas died in February 1694 (new style) about age 57, leaving Anne with several young children. She quickly married John Summers. Summers was appointed the administrator of Thomas Mims estate, a normal custom in colonial times. Since "John Minns" received estate left to him "by his father Thomas Minns" in Feb 1694, this researcher assumes that John was at least 16 years old and wanted to receive his inheritance.

Children of THOMAS MIMS and ANNE are:
i. ELIZABETH MIMS, b. Mar 29, 1677, Christ's Church, Middlesex Co VA; d. Oct 19, 1678, Middlesex Co VA.
ii. JOHN MIMS, b. c 1678, prob Middlesex Co VA; d. Aft. 1694.
iii. THOMAS MIMS, b. c Apr 24, 1681, Christ Church, Middlesex Co VA; d. Aft. 1704.
Notes for THOMAS MIMS:
Thomas Mims was born in Middlesex Co VA where his christening at the "Great Church" of Christ Church Parish was recorded in the church record. His father died in Feb 1694 when Thomas was only 12 years old and his mother quickly remarried to John Summers.
In 1704, this Thomas Mims was arrested for traveling "on a public road on the Sabbath Day with a loaded beast."
This Thomas Mims is often credited with being the Thomas Mims who married Mellyanne Martin in New Kent Co VA in Feb 1699. However, this Thomas Mims is too young to marry in 1699. Also, it is doubtful that this Thomas Mims would have married in New Kent Co, had children born in New Kent Co in 1701 and 1705, and yet been on the road with a loaded beast in 1704 in Middlesex Co. It is especially obvious that there are two different Thomas Mims because there are several records of a Thomas Mims in James City Co VA as early as 1662.

Descendants of Thomas Mims (Henrico/New Kent Co)
THOMAS MIMS (THOMAS1) was born c 1674 in VA, and died Aft. Jul 1721 in prob Henrico Co VA. He married (1) MELLYANNE MARTIN Feb 10, 1698/99 in St. Peter's, New Kent Co VA. She was born c 1680, and died Bef. 1717 in VA. He married (2) SARAH Bef. Jul 1718 in prob New Kent Co VA.
Notes for THOMAS MIMS:
Thomas Mims was born about 1674 in James City County or New Kent County VA.
In Feb 1699 about age 25, Thomas married Mellyanne Martin in St. Peter's Parish. The births of their 5 children were recorded in the parish register for the years 1701 through 1712. Perhaps Mellyanne died after 1712, because by 1717, Thomas was married to Sarah.
In Apr 1704 in Henrico County, "Thomas Mims Jr" bought 74 acres on the south side of Chickahominy Swamp from Gideon Macon. This tract has a well recorded history as it was sold through several owners. Gideon Macon received it as a grant in 1698, selling it to Mims in 1704. Though a deed showing Mims selling this land to Francis Roen [Rowen] was not recorded, in 1706, Roen sold it to Richard Mosbey, mentioning its history again. (Valentine Papers; Henrico Co Deed) So, Thomas sold this land between Apr 1704 and 1706.
[where was Mims living c1705 until 1714?]
On Dec 23 1714, Thomas received a patent for 500 acres on the south side of the main branch of Tuckahoe Creek in Henrico County, paying 50 shillings. In Aug 1717, Thomas Mims "of Henrico Co, planter" sold a portion of this property, 100 acres on the south side of Tuckahoe Creek "being part of grant to Thomas Mims" to John Scott for L10. On Jul 1 1718, Thomas sold 100 acres near Tuckahoe Creek "being part of 500 acres granted to said Mims and bounded by Mims" to Joel Chandler for L5. Sarah "wife of Mims" relinquished her dower and his brother Lionel witnessed the deed. Just three days later on July 4 1718, Thomas sold 100 acres of his grant to his brother Lionel for L5. In April 1721, a deed from Thomas Mims to Philip Webber was proved in court [for what land?]. In April 1727, Col. John Scott sold the 100 acres he had bought in 1714 that was "part of a greater tract of land patented to Thomas Mims."
[300 acres of the original 500 acre tract is sold; is Webber getting 200 acres?]
It is not known when Thomas died, but there are no further records for Thomas after July 1721. No will or probate records are known.
Of Thomas' children, two sons (David and John) lived their lives in Goochland County while two sons (Thomas and Benjamin) moved to North Carolina. It is not known what happened to daughter Sarah.
