Individual Details
David Mims
(1 Jan 1701 - Oct 1781)
David Mims was born in New Kent County, Virginia where his birth was recorded in the parish register. David grew up in Henrico County, Virginia. His father had moved there by 1704.
About 1726 in Henrico County, David married Agnes Weldy, a daughter of William Weldy (Wildy). David and Agnes had 9 children with the first born in Henrico but the remaining born in Goochland County, Virginia.
In Oct 1726, David received a patent on 358 acres in Henrico County on the north side of the James River on Licking Hole Creek, paying 40 shillings. Less than a year later, in Sep 1727, David sold this tract to his uncle "Leonall Mims" for L20. Just 3 days later on Sep 29 1727, David sold 179 acres on both sides of Licking Hole Creek to his brother John for L10. David marked both deeds with his initial D. [how and when did David get this land???]
Goochland County was formed from part of Henrico in 1728 and David left numerous records in Goochland County. In Aug 1728, a suit by David Mims against John Quin was dismissed; in Jan 1730 in Goochland County, David was a witness to a deed between Andrew Mourman and Thomas Stone; ; in June 1731 he served as a juror. An interesting case was continued over a period of time: in May 1731, a trespass suit by David against Richard Levins and John Sutton Farrar was found for the defendant, however in June 1731, the judgement was made in favor of Mims though the court directed the defendant to plead at the next court. At the July Court, the plaintiff was given additional time to amend his charge, but the case was continued to the August Court. The final result of the suit is not known. In July 1731, he served as a juror. David was also recorded numerous times in the Goochland court order books.
In Jan 1733, David bought back the 358 acres on upper Licking Hole Creek from his uncle Lionel for L40. In Aug 1734, his property was mentioned in a patent to Charles Toney. (Nugent 4) He was named in other patents in Mar 1736, Aug 1737, Feb 1738, Mar 1740, Sep 1745, and Aug 1753.
In Jan 1736, David sold his original patent of 358 acres to his first cousin Robert Mims, son of Lionel Mims, for L40. The deed again specifies the property as 358 acres on the north side of the James River on Licking Hole Creek. David only owned the property for 3 years, buying and selling it for L40. David marked the deed with his initial D. In Nov 1736, David was mentioned with adjoining land in a deed between Henry Harper and John Mullins. [what land is this that he still has?]
In April 1739, David (incorrectly transcribed as Daniel again) was a witness when Robert sold the 358 acre tract on Licking Hole Creek to John Wright for L45. Along with David, John Mims was also a witness.
In June 1746, William Weldy gave Agnes Mims and her husband David 195 acres "whereon David and Agnes now dwell." In the June 1746 tithe list for Goochland Co, David was taxed on himself and 2 sons (Drury and Shadrack). These sons would have been at least 16 years of age. In 1748, only David and Shadrack were listed.
The next few references from Sam Mims' booklet need to be verified:
In 1744, David bought 1000 acres from John Batting;
in 1755, David sold 100 acres on Licking Hole Creek to Thomas Mims [dates 1758 and 1759?];
in April 1777 David gave 315 acres on Licking Hole Creek to his son David Jr;
in 1781, his will was proved at the October Court.
David died in 1781 at age 80. [need will and settlement]
