John Martin married Mary Smart, daughter of William and Mary Ness Smart. They were the parents of nine known children: John M, Henry, Sarah Frances, Elizabeth, Isabel, Mary, Jacob, William and James.
John Martin Reece does not have a gravestone in Concordia Cemetery, but his wife Mary’s name is on the Master list of re-burials as being placed in this cemetery.
Initially buried at the Old Whiting Cemetery that was located at 121st and Front St. near Lakeshore. Cemetery land was purchased from Henry Schrage by the Standard Oil Company in 1913. The Cemetery and all internments were removed and place with other NWI cemeteries. Families that came forward to claim remains from the Old Whiting Cemetery were offered plots in surrounding Hammond cemeteries. Mary is on master list of re-burials as being placed in this cemetery, burial location unknown due to shoddy record keeping.
