Obituary (Lake Charles American Press; Wednesday, February 2, 2005)
Raymond "Huff" Hoffpauir Jr., 71, left this world at 7:10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, following a valiant battle with cancer. He was a lifelong resident of Lake Charles. He was a 1952 graduate of LaGrange Senior High School. Following two years of service in the Army at Fort Brag, he attended McNeese State University before working in construction for 10 years. A man of great honor, he was a lieutenant at Troop D for 21 years from 1964 to 1985. He was named Louisiana Trooper of the Year in 1971 for his bravery in saving the lives of two elderly men trapped in a flaming auto during Memorial Day weekend near the Interstate 10 Iowa exit. He was also employed at Boeing from 1985 until its closure in 1990 and at Louisiana Pigment from 1991 to 1995 until the discovery of his illness. "Huff" loved to work with his hands, was very creative and always inventing or customizing something in his workshop. He was a master finish carpenter and car mechanic, and he crafted handmade fishing lures. Among his passions in life were hunting, fishing, and camping with his family and friends. He loved life and pushed himself hard to get the most out of every day. He had a high standard for himself. He was honest, hardworking and generous to those in need, putting others before himself in time and energy. He served his family as he did the public with courage, integrity, strength and determination. His illness did not defeat him; in every obstacle he amazed and inspired family, friends and doctors as to the extent he rose to the challenges and limitations of the disease. His body was weakened and finally failed him. Not wanting to leave us, his spirit fought for survival until the last breath of life. Because of his Christian faith he is now able to live on brand new, whole and free in the hereafter. In our hearts and memories he will travel hand in hand with us onward, until we are reunited with him again in Heaven. He will be greatly loved and missed by all who knew him; they have lost a great protector, adviser, guardian and friend. He would be proud to know that the generations to come will cherish and pass down his memory, wisdom and famous "Corn Fry" camp recipe. He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Mera Morgan Hoffpauir; and their children, daughters Regina Kingham and husband Sean Kingham of Gillis and JoAnne Rougeau and husband Jay Rougeau of LeBleu Settlement and son Allen Ray Hoffpauir of Lake Charles. He is also survived by his children, daughters Rita Picou and husband Jerry Picou, Jennifer Passman and husband Keith Passman and sons Thomas Hoffpauir and David Hoffpauir, all of Baton Rouge. He was preceded in death by his mother, Odessa Guidry Hoffpauir; father Raymond Hoffpauir Sr.; and sisters, Dorthy Leach, formerly of Lake Charles, and Evelyn Carr, formerly of Lafayette. His is survived by one brother, Kenneth Hoffpauir and wife Barbara Hackett Hoffpauir of Lake Charles. He was blessed with 16 grandchildren, cody Kindham, Sarah Kingham and Savanah Kingham, all of Gillis, Alex Hoffpauir and Dylan Rougeau, both of LeBleu Settlement, Jacob Hoffpauir of Iowa, and JoJo Hoffpauir, David Hoffpauir Jr., DJ Passman, Erin Passman, Michelle Passman, Sarah Passman, Amice Hoffpauir, Leslie Hoffpauir, Michelle Price and Eric Wilson, all of Baton Rouge; and four great-grandchildren, Caleb Passman, Ashleigh Rains, Haleigh Rains and Breahna Summers, all of Baton Rouge. His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, in Johnson Funeral Home. His good friend, the Rev. Danny Miller, will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation is 3-10 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. Thursday. The family would like to recognize and thank Dr. Craig R. Broussard and staff for the personal care that resulted in his excellent quality of life in these years. You allowed him to cope, and survive beyond expectancy and with hope and dignity. No words can express our gratitude; Huff's trust in you said it all. We would also like to include the staff and doctors of Extended Care of Southwest Louisiana for brightening his last days with their loving care. They helped to provide a supportive, peaceful environment and shared in Huff's never-failing humor and spirit. "Huff" wanted to provide a written record of his life and stories for his children and grandchildren and friends. Visit www.partingwishes.com and search for the Raymond "Huff" Hoffpauir Jr. memorial. You can add personal thoughts, memories and photos to this loving work in progress. Words of comfort to the family may be left at www.johnsonfuneralhome.net
