Obituary: Merritt V. Sweeney, 94, died Monday. July 14, 2008 in his home. A native of Lake Arthur, Merritt had lived in Lake Charles since 1937. He was employed with Cities Service for thirty four years retiring in 1979 as a supervisor of the power plant. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Master Mason since 1976 and was a member of Ruth Chapter # 16 of the Eastern Star for over 50 years and Justice Lodge # 449 for 63 years as well as the Habibi Shrine Center. Merritt was an Eagle Scout awarded with 2 palms in August 6, 1930. He was very proud to be a member of these organizations. Merritt will always be remembered for his expertise in being able to fix or repair anything. He was an avid reader spending many hours researching his family genealogy and had a special love for music and dancing. He is survived by his children, Carleton and Janice Sweeney of Baton rouge. Charles and Charlotte Sweeney of Houston and Lynn and Coleman LeBleu of Lake Charles; grandchildren, Mike and Nina Sweeney of Covington. Suzanne and Scott Keagle of Baton Rouge, Bro. Chris Sweeney of New Orleans, Craig and Mignon Sweeney of Madisonville. Stephen and Nathalie of Houston, Brad Sweeney of Birmingham, Jeff and Kelly LeBleu and Pam and Jay McKinney of Lake Charles; ten great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife of seventy years, Ella Hoffpauir Sweeney; sisters, Anna Mae Frye and Evelyn Sweeney; brother, Bill Sweeney. His funeral will be at 10:00 am, Friday, July 18, 2008 in Johnson Funeral Home. Rev. Robin Norris will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be in the funeral home Thursday from 5 until 9 pm with Order of the Eastern Star and Masonic Services at 7:00 pm. Pallbearers will be Chris Sweeney, Craig Sweeney, Jeff LeBleu, Lance LeBleu. Jay McKinney. Scott Keagle, Christopher Keagle, Cameron Keagle. Brad Sweeney and Stephen Sweeney.
