Individual Details
John Franklin Dubose
(4 Mar 1870 - 23 Apr 1953)
"Aunt Octavia died and my grand father, and her brother, John Franklin Dubose, took the children in and help raise them.
John Franklin bought all his sister's and brother's and his mother's interest in the farm that John Dubose and Mary (Roach) Peacock had bought from one of the Sarvers. He had quite a spread. I remember the huge tractors. One was a Rumbly
and the other was a Huber. One of my brothers has what we called the 'Huber Jack'. It was used in the community as a house jack.
John Franklin contracted with the canal company to build some of the rice canals in the area. His pay-roll was melted down when his site camp burned. I recall that when Rosevelt called in gold, my uncle, John Calvin, said they turned it in.
My mother, Tina, use to talk about the fire and recalls stacking gold and silver coins on the dinning table at nite for a pass time.
John Franklin was also a deputy and use to ride the area on horse back with his rifle which has a scar on the stock where his spurs scratched it as he got on and off his horse. He told a tail about being shot at from some bushes and was not hit. So he got off his horse and fired into the brush and never heard anything else.
One of my brothers now has the rifle. He traded grandpa out of it for a saddle back in the thirties. There was talk of him chasing some of the James gang." source: Lamar Boulet, in an e-mail message to the Hoffpauir-L mail list.
