Paul Aucoin
(Abt 1834 - 1865)
Baptized in Catholic church, 13 Jul 1839 at the age of 5., shown in household of Treville Ocoin in Calcasieu Parish La in 1850. In 1860 he is evidently the first O'Quinn in Texas as he is residing in the "Hickey family" boarding house in Orange County as a member of the railroad construction crew. Also shown are his future brother-in-law Francois Hoffpower and his uncle J. E. Elender, the contractor for the railroad.
A marriage license was issued in 1862 in Jefferson Co. Tx to he and Elizabeth Hoffpauir and the ceremony was performed by Justice of the Peace, Nathan Wheeler.
He was mustered into Spaight's 21st Texas Regiment of the Confederate forces and served in Co. B, 11th Bn. Companies A & B were reorganized as part of the Sabine Pass Guard. The Company commander was Capt. I. R. Burch, who owned the steam boat "Sabine". Later the company was under the command of K. D. Keith of Sabine Pass. Co. B was the artillery arm for Spaight's battalion and they served at Fort Griffin and Fort Grigsby in Port Neches, Tx. In 1863 they served aboard the "Uncle Ben" and took part in two battles of Sabine Pass on 8 Sep and 21 January. In November of 1864 they became Co. "I" of the the 13th Regiment and was stationed at Fort Manhasset, Sabine Pass, Tx. Also serving in the same company were his relatives, Asa Hoffpauir and Louis DeBlanc and his Uncle, J. E. Elender served in Co. A. of Spaight's Bn.
Family legend indicates that the battle in which he died was witnessed by his wife and her family.
