Owen SIMPSON

(1808 - 5 May 1879)

It is family lore that Owen's unnamed father was Scottish and one day was helping an uncle load a ship bound for America and the uncle basically shanghaied him and sold him as an indentured servant to a family in Kentucky around 1800.There, he married and started a family, having Owen and possibly other kids. The 1870 census does say his father is born outside the US.

Owen Sr. married a woman named Eliza (beth) Taylor (1817-1900) and Eliza had 11 or 12 children with Owen. Their names were - Catherine, Benjamin Franklin,Louisa, Mary, Temperance, Joshua, William, Narcissus, Lucretia, Martha, Owen Jr., and Nancy. The 1900 census says Eliza had 11 kids, only 4 of the 11 were still living in 1900, I think Owen Jr, Nancy, Lucretia and another. I have 12 names though, not sure if it was a clerical error or if one of the twelve is listed incorrectly as one of their children.

Catherine, Benjamin, and Louisa were born in Indiana, the rest in Missouri.

Temperance and Lucretia I believe married the same man, Joshua Smothers (Temperance in 1861 until she died in 1875, and Lucretia in 1875)

Nancy may have married a man named Seth Willis.

Catherine was listed on the census forms as an idiotic and suffering from nervousness in the 1850, 1860 and 1880 censuses respectively and lived with her mother most of her life.

Louisa may have married a man named Hugh Hart.

Joshua may have married someone named Mary Espey.

I think Narcissus married a John Stanley.

Owen Jr. (my g-g-g-grandfather) married a woman named Laura Lizzie; Thackery.

I have heard maybe Owen Sr. had a brother named William and their father may have been a Joshua Simpson. Owen Sr. did have sons named Joshua and William so that would fit into naming patterns. There is a Joshua Simpson in the 1820 Federal Census in KY and another in IN that would be about the right ages and they both have a son that could be Owen Sr. There is 1 Joshua Simpson in the 1810 census in Kentucky that would be about right, he has 2 possible sons and 4-5 possible daughters living with him. The two boys could fit with Owen Sr. and William.

Any help here trying to see if I can link a Joshua as a father to Owen Sr. and hopefully from there maybe an immigration record.
