Individual Details

Benjamin Dodd WHEELER

(29 Oct 1731 - 7 May 1802)

Benjamin had a patent of land of 600 acres in 1734 on Mechunk and another patent of 200 acres in 1740 on Moore's Creek in Albermarle County Virginia.

Benjamin also had considerable land holdings, some inherited, some purchased. Upon his death in March, 1802, his estate inventory was valued at $6239.22. His land consisted of: "Wheeler's Addition", "Green Springs", "Clark's Park", "Mount Pleasant", "Saint Omar's", "Wheeler's Beginning", "Roughborough", and "Thomas' Beginning". Benjamin is shown in the Continental Census as residing in Port Tobacco West in Charles County, Maryland in 1778. He also took a Fidelity Oath there in that year. This is consistent with a note in WFT that Giles Thomas, who is believed to have married Ann Wheeler, daughter of Benjamin and Mary Neal Wheeler, spent his active life in Port Tobacco before moving to Blacksburg to be with his son. Is his birth date 1731 or 1734. Is this same Benjamin Wheeler who married Elizabeth Green? Christopher Smithson shows as same with two marriages. Married Elizabeth Green 1793 Mary Elizabeth Neale 1763
